THE RITZ

The famous Ritz Hotels were founded by Swiss, Ceaser Ritz, in the 1800's. I  know you have heard they are very "ritzy."  Well I had a silly thought this morning as I fed the Buble' family of seven.  I fed them cracker crumbs of RITZ  crackers. They were Ritzy this morning and happy. Silly, but true.  Lets leave that thought were it lies--in the Silly Bin.   It was very hot on Balcony, but I saw two bikers.  One on each side of Lake.  I also saw a man fishing.  Out to get them early. He competes with another for the biggest catch and picture on the Board.  We have a space called BRAGGING  RIGHTS.  That is where they hang my poems.  Those who want attention (me) try to have it.  Forgive me, but I am human.

HEEL OF THE BREAD

I like the "heel of the bread."  Nothing to do with conserving-just like it,  Had a heel of raisin bread this morning. Good with bacon (turkey), and a great peach on my oatmeal.  Life is Good!! The Lake is a painting with calm water reflecting the Cyprus and Willow trees.  Whoever designed the landscape of the Lake did a good job.  Those trees along with the Willow trees have always been a joy to me.  I saw MR. RAM-ROD STRAIGHT  walking.  He is very tall and such good posture.  Must  be younger than me.  Although I have been told I have good posture too.  Good at 94.  Many other "hazards  of the age" have gone downhill.  I can still make a BLOG out of nothing.  Wish I could say that a good writer is like that.  But I struggle along and try not to make too many Editor mistake. (Sophia) I read a lot and I have read some really bad works that are printed.

OFF WE GO !!!

I watched at 7 this morning from my Balcony, as the Jet took off.  A&A#2 took off with  a vapor trailing behind.  God Speed as they travel to visit another long time friend.  They will have fun, I know.  We all need to get away sometime.  I remember when T. and I traveled a lot.  As I have mentioned-all kinds of traveling ways.  But the most exciting was by plane.  I never got over the feel as you lift off.  Hard to explain unless you have had the good  fortune to experience it.  The most exciting is to travel over the ocean.  You have to have a lot of trust to really enjoy that one.  We did it several times. Glad we had the chance to experience lots of travel.  Makes good memories.

BLUEBERRIES FOR LITTLE DOT

Blue for blueberries of course but also for a little blue in the sky.  After a really electrical storm last night, the sky looks beautiful this morning.  76 degrees and I got to comfortably sit out.  No wasp or birds?  But I was blessed to see a beautiful green humming bird try to feast on my yellow Lantana.  Right up close. How exciting.  They have been rare to see this summer.  About the blueberries (hence the blue text)  I found my last frozen pack of them in my freezer.  Oh, I knew they were there all along, just was hoarding them.  They were sure good on oatmeal.  Another shout out for oatmeal.  I bet you have not noticed the very large box you can buy?   Reminds me of the doll cradle I used to make from an oatmeal box for little girls.   This big one would make a "fine" one.  If I only had a little girl close to make one for.  Also  thought of my favorite kid's book--BLUEBERRIES FOR SAL.  Remember? I also could use a kid to read it to.

JUST TOO HOT ON BALCONY

I keep writing in red for hot.  I get full sun in morning on Balcony, so it is hard to find a little shade.  I did see an Army (or Navy)  of some kind of ducks floating on Lake.  At least they had their feet in the water.  Otherwise, the whole picture was very still and without motion, Summer time for sure.  I thought -- what did people like my generation do without air conditioning?  We had these little floor fans. The richer you were-the bigger the fan, and also some would turn from side to side. Our first built house had an attic fan. We were "rich" then.  Did a pretty good job.  We would set it to go off after we were all in bed asleep.  Linda would get up and turn it back on as soon as it   stopped.  Truman and I would laugh at how quick she got it back on.  Had a little issue with her, but could you blame her?  No.  Next we graduated to the window units.  Had  one nice one. It was not till we built on Riverwood that we had central air.  We had come a long way baby by that time.  Oh my,  the good old days.  Makes you appreciate the good old days more.  SO BE IT

PIMIENTO CHEESE

I have been told I make good pimiento cheese.  It is easy--keep it simple, use the best cheese and mayo.  Anyway,  I have some from Cyber (not the best) and it made a good grilled cheese last night.  Looking to use it up, I added a tablespoon to my scrambled egg for breakfast.  Now you must cook it gently.  Add a dash of milk to the mix.  Soft cook and salt and pepper is good also. Yumm. Jan and I are doing a few errands this morning.  I get to ride along and look out the window, and see the many changes that have come about since my last "breakout."  I am afraid to go most places just yet. So I do enjoy an outing.  Maybe pick up lunch on the way home.?  Something different.  Believe me I have learned to be satisfied where I am.  Just glad to still be here.!!

WAR OF THE WASP!!!!

Help, my can of wasp spray blew away one windy day.  They are mad little devils.  They hover by my screen door to Balcony and fly inside unawares.  I have killed 2 inside and 3 outside.  .  An unsettling feeling to look up and see one crawling on the drapes.  Forgive me Lord, but the first thing I saw that might be a weapon was my Holy Bible.  I grabbed it and swung it at him and hit the mark.  One more victory for the Holy Word!!!!  I  have since then killed one more inside and  two or three on the Balcony.  Little excitement that I do not need.  I discovered they were in the watering can I have on the balcony.  I got rid of that, as I believe they were starting a nest in it. Otherwise, pretty calm and warm today.  But you never know what lurks around the corner.

RAMBLING

First I have dubbed my little sparrow family THE BUBLE' FAMILY. (Because I like and listen to Michael Buble" a lot.) And it does start with a "B")  They came and feasted on graham crackers this morning. I watched a swimmer in pool early.  Good for her.  Saw a new walker with his LARGE black and white (mix) dog.  Saw MISS BIG HAT, and also saw her hat on the internet  They called it a Flower Pot Hat. Also.  It really looks that way. i also saw MISS I STILL LOOK GOOD IN SHORTS. Now that was not a nice thing to say.   Skipped the Saturday pancake to keep sugar under control.  Oh well, oatmeal is still a winner.   With all the trimmings, it  is the best anyway for me.  Getting hot fast, with the rain letting up.  Could not stay long on Balcony.  I did see a few more walkers.  Go figure.  I sometime think they miss the best weather and opt for the less best.  People.  They are interesting.  What else for today? Will tell all tomorrow.  If you will stay with me.

P. S.

P. S. to the egg- in-  hole post.  You can find this story and a few others in my little book I wrote for grandchildren, called CHILDHOOD  MEMORIES of LITTLE DOT. Betty Boop

HOW MANY WAYS??

How many ways can you cook or use eggs?  I had an egg-in-a-hole this morning.  So good (in) whole wheat bread, turkey bacon, fresh navel orange and ever-loving coffee.   Looking at bird family enjoying  their crumbs in peace. on the Balcony --thought about eggs.  Memory is a little faded but I do remember my first egg in an" egg cup".  Before it was always in a coffee cup.  I mean soft boiled or three minute egg in a fancy cup.. It was on a train bound for North Carolina to visit my favorite Aunt Peg, Mothers sister.  The one with no children and would really spoil me.  I was about 14 I think. and first train  trip alone. My egg was served in a pretty egg cup.  A first for me.  My I felt special, sitting there in the dinning car.  My Mother had made me a brown and white checked gingham suit.  And , I loved the little beige hat to go with it.  Do you remember Spectator Pumps?.  Some brown and white and some black and white.  I even remember navy and red ones.  Mine were brown to match that cute little suit. I as a "vision" I thought.  What an adventure for an  almost grown girl who had been no father north than Canton, Ms.  I guess memories that make the lasting impressions stay with you.  My how far I have traveled since then.

HERE WE GO DOWN MEMORY LANE. How could I have thought I could close those doors?  Never.!!!!

THE BIRD FAMILY

First there is HEAD HONCHO, Bert-then his OLD GIRL, Beatrice, then comes BIG BROTHER, Bob. LITTLE SISTER Betty, and finally smallest of them all-baby BILLY,  they enjoyed cracker crumbs and the last bite of my biscuit.  My Mother was named Willie Mae.  She was named for her favorite uncle William.  She was always happy to tell that story.  Sometime she was called Willie or Billie.  Daddy called her Bill when he was serious.  Most people have a "nick" name.  My name is Doris (thanks to my daddy), Mama said it was for some actress of that day.  So I was called "Dot." Makes no sense whatsoever.  Some Dorothy's are called Dot, but not  Doris --just  Dot.  So what else is new"  We named middle daughter Jan. thinking she could not shorten that one, but people still think she is Janet or Janice.  Sorry- we tried.

ANOTHER RAINY DAY

Rain is getting to be the norm.  Climate change?  What if we turn into a rain forest?  Could you adapt?  I see no end in sight. The weather is one thing man can't change--think about that.  Or would you like to think about what I had for  breakfast? Something I have not tried before.    MANDARIN  oranges on my oatmeal.  Now that is good.  Had to look them up.  They did not originate in China (they think)  but wild in India. Maybe 3,ooo years ago.  How they got to China, who knows?  But aren't we glad?  I imagine they grow in other parts where the climate lets them.  To each it's own.  Let us bloom where we are planted, so the saying goes.  So what to do today?  I usually like to wash clothes on a rainy day (throwback to the days when a washer and dryer were just a dream), but I am caught up in washing, due to the FREE washer and dryer now.  Ha, now isn't that selfish?  People are funny that way.  Free is good even if you don't need it.  Must work in that one.

I used up my creativity yesterday-did you read the silly little poem I wrote yesterday.?  Don't bother, .perhaps it is not worth reading.  I am a little rusty with the poetry.  Guess I need to try again.  But that silly little fellow I keep meeting in the hall is so jolly, I need to write about him.  Escaping into fantasy world is important to me.  Well lets close this show down and hope for something to write about will come tomorrow.

BEATRICE & "LITTLE BETTY"

More about the Bird Family.  Seems they have a little girl named "Betty".  She and mama Beatrice come to breakfast.  Little Betty is a little slow to "get with the show".  Still wants Mama B. to feed her!!  She is as big as her mama, but flutters her wings and begs so pitifully.  Mama ignores her and finally has enough!!  And away she flew, leaving little Betty surprised.  Little Betty finally gets it,  Mam is not coming back. so I must do it myself.  TOUGH LOVE? (hate that word)   No, not really--just plain loving parenting.  Some human parents  can't get that right. Truman and I never yelled or spanked our girls. (maybe a swat on the bottom from me) just tried to explain and live by example.  It worked.  Can't understand any other way.  Made many mistakes, but they were the best we could do.  I think it worked.

WAYS TO ESCAPE

1.  T.V. (EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND)

2. Good romantic book.

3. Balcony (for many reasons.)

4.  Although not really an escape. My morning devotional and Bible reading.

5. When lived on Riverwood--the LAKE.

6. Cooking something good.

7. Pancakes !!!

Although not pancakes this morning, I did pick up from Cyber.  I got a lovely piece of ham and will have half for lunch.  Went good with scrambled egg, (my grits), Rye toast and coffee.  I guess secretly slipping out early and being the second (grumpy old man is first), to order breakfast, can be termed as an escape.  Whatever yours is--do it.  Memories are also very high on list.  Don't get too caught up in that one.

BOUNTY OF BLESSINGS

Yes, yes, yes!!  J. Our washers and dryers have been converted to no-coin.  Big improvement, courtesy of the work of our Resident Council.  Good work.  I will wash a load today--coin free. And along came BOB.  Bert & Beatrice brought half grown son with them this morning. I named him BOB. It could be BOBBIE, the way it fluttered its wings like a girl.  Anyway it was fun to see three together.  Soon joined by the family.  Guess they liked graham crackers.  OLD CROW.  He got in on a big bite.  I scared him away and he did not come back.  Maybe the whole family was not worth crackers.  So early morning drama. On to breakfast.  I put anything I like on oatmeal, mostly to surprise you.  With no banana and peach not ripe enough-what to do?  Peanut butter did not sound right.  Ah Ha!  I saw grapes from yesterday's fruit cup.   Cut them up with small amount of honey dew and toasted biscuit & turkey bacon went down well too.  Oh, yes a fresh orange and coffee.  Pretty full and saucy!!!  Amy brought sugar-free fudge cycles. CROW-NO- SHOW

Bert & Beatrice enjoyed the raisin toast crumbs in peace.  Old Crow chose to sleep in I guess.  I observed him and three other old crows late yesterday fighting a fearsome battle over who sat on the cross over the Chapel.  Only three best seats,  you know.  So one had to take a lower seat.  Not the best one in the house, so a battle went on.  They would dive at each other and crash as I am sure feathers flew.  Chase would begin and one would fly back to regain the perch.  Small time they would battle again.  Guess the best man won--they all look alike to me.  So they are home in the neat and resting. Meanwhile it is kind of cool and quiet.  I thought of that great old hymn-MORNING HAS BROKEN. Do you know it?  One of the beautiful old ones that sounds like poetry.  Wish I could write pretty ,  but alas mine just come our funny.

DAZZLEING NEW DECK

Said goodbye to 3 hard working men who have been laboring in the hot sun for sometime now.  They left it looking good.!!!!  But guess who is back? OLD CROW of course. I chased him as he flew from one end to the other of the Balcony.  Talk about Crazy?  Hope no one saw that drama.  He eyed the crumbs and did not light between the big pots.  Ha Ha!!  I bet he will not give up==we will see.

Do you dream a lot?  I do.  Last night I went in my dreams back to Riverwood and the Lake.  I don't dream much of Truman, but he was there last night.  We spent many, many wonderful years there, and the memories are rich indeed. Meadow Ridge was the busy years.  All girls were born while we lived in our first house built.  Riverwood was different.  Grandchildren dot my many memories there.  Travel and retirement too.  How can I not enjoy all of it?

ENCOUNTERS

Interesting word.  Looked it up.  I saw some encounters  this morning.  Lady With two Cockers did their visit to my lawn, and encountered.  Went on to meet LADY WITH BIG HAT going the other way, Encounter.  They spoke and paused for a few.  I encountered a lady buying a dozen sweet rolls in the Cyber. (12?)  Yes I heard her explain she was taking them to her co-workers.  Don't know where, but that must be a happy encounter.  I myself had an encounter with a salad plate  size pancake!! Nothing like it with real bacon, with scrambled egg on side.  Of course coffee.  I brought a sausage biscuit for tomorrow breakfast.  With a soft boiled egg--no clean up.  I encountered a resident on the way back, who wished she had a pancake too.  So encounters have been many already this morning.  What else is in store?  I may walk a little extra as my system encounters the pancake.  Wish me luck.  I hope it is worth it.

But then I check --Ta Da !! I still had one.  She drove by,  picked it up,  and I told her to keep it, as chances are I want need it again.  She had CoCo  in the car, and she sat in her car bed and looked so happy.  Such a pretty dog ,but Amy said she has been hard to train. She was taking her away for a while because she keeps barking at a new neighbor dog.  Back to pies.  I made many, many, in my heyday. Of course chocolate was the all time favorite.  I am sorry for all the sugar and butter I used to make them so good.  I did not know any better about the hazards of them.  Oh, well. PINE THICKET

Green for Pines.  As I look over my little "Pine Thicket". (sp) , I think of Winne and Truman's Mother.  Old fashioned name for a  small pocket of trees.  When we used to visit Truman's cousin while she lived here at SCV, I would go to her balcony and gaze at the small group of Pine trees below her balcony.  It looks "so country like."  Little did I dream I would some day live in the Balcony across from where she lived.  I now like to imagine she was the planter of this small forest below me.  It is filled with old fashioned trees.  Magnolia, Pine, Cedar, and many I can't tell you what.  Small shrubs that look like they grew in the woods. A haven for many birds.  Anyway, my imagination gets ahead of the real truth sometime.  So let me imagine.  O. K.  You make your own memories in your Bank of Memories.

MORNING WORLD

As I drank my Cyber coffee on my Balcony, I noticed two ladies having breakfast outside the Cyber.  Good idea. I could do that if I had someone to open the heavy door and help me in and out.  Independence to do that is over.  I will just order over phone and pick it up and enjoy in my apartment.  I can still do that.  Mr. Crow has gone on to harass  someone else.  But when Bert came for biscuit crumbs  , Mr. Mocking Bird beat him to it.  Scared him away-kind of scared me too.  They can be very aggressive.  With all the noise and flurry.  Nature takes it place.       I refreshed my Hall table yesterday with a new scene.  My good neighbor, Martha Love let me add her beautiful little Dutch figurines  to my old ones.  They are so pretty there.  Added to the my grey crock with the blue band, filled with sunflowers is a nice change. I remember the crock as it was my Mothers.  She made homemade mayOo in it, beating it wit her egg beater.  I was allowed sometime to slowly add the oil as she beat.  Good mayo, by the way.  It was used to make real whipped cream too.  I treasure the crock and the memory.

As I sat on the Balcony with my Cyber coffee, I noticed two having breakfast outside the Cyber.  Now that is a good idea.  But for me, by myself, who would open  the door and help me out and back in?  Sometime I think back just for a moment when I was independent and could hold my own door open.  Sure was nice.  Now I am happy just to order over phone and go pick it up.  Those were the "good old days" when things were at the best, when I could sit down and be waited on.  Spoiled?. Yes!! Oh well,  OLD CROW still  seems to have given up and on to harassing someone else.  Bert came for biscuit crumbs and was scared away by a Mocking Bird.  Kind of scared me too.  They look so confident that they can scare the other birds. Poor little sparrow is low on the totem pole I think.  Any way Mr. Mocking bird is king now. Gee,  I really do have to get a life.  I arranged my Hall table fresh yesterday.  My good neighbor Martha Love, let me add to my display, her little Dutch figurines. I have some too and with the grey crock with blue band filled with Sunflowers,  looks refreshing and pretty. That crock was my mothers and I remember when she made  homemade mayo she would hand beat it with her egg beater.  Remember them? I was allowed to slowly add oil as she beat the mixture.  Down Memory Lane again.  I am fortunate to have lived during a time when so many things were introduced and changes made.

FROM HAIL STATE_TO CROW GONE_TO GOD BLESS AMERICA

Full few days.  I think the OLD CROW HAS GIVEN UP.  Maybe.  I enjoyed all the music on TV last night.  I sang along with the best of them.  Love the old favorites that pledge our devotion to the land that I love.  How about that Jimmy Buffett?  I enjoyed breakfast from Cyber.  My usual of two eggs perfectly cooked over light, sausage, Rye toast and best coffee ever.  My crew of three men are determined to finish the job of a new deck around the swimming pool.  I have worried for their safety every day-it has been so hot  I have grown tired of my Beach Scene on my Hall  table.  Think I will change it to sunflowers today.  I have a confession to make about the Grumpy Old man I see picking up breakfast.  He started a conversation with me!  As we were drawing our coffee, he showed me his  state-of-the-art coffee holder attached to his walker.  Said it would keep from spilling his coffee from it's cup.  Really?  I told him I needed one too.  Sorry I had bad thoughts about him, It does not  pay to think too bad  thoughts about someone you don't even know. CRAZY OLD GIRL

Not the Crow (however he is crazy) but the old girl who lives in the apartment  where he harasses her. Now talk about crazy!!She takes the cake, so to speak.  I decided to move the place I have been leaving crumbs at the end of the Balcony to the center between two big flower pots.  I think he is a little leery of going between them and right in front of my door.  Ha Ha.  He came and pecked on the gutter at the end and looked so sad.  Flew away.  In came Bert finally to inspect.  Took a crumb and took it away.  Others came to the original spot and looked baffled.  It may take time for them to find the new spot.  But so far Old Crow went hungry.  Never say never-we will see. Meanwhile at the ranch, I had a  frozen waffle (whole wheat of course).  Turkey bacon, fresh orange, coffee and a handful of pills.  Coffee makes the meds go down.  We are having a 4th of July menu for today. annoying old crow

He makes me RED mad.  He actually was waiting for me this morning.  I put out crumbs and waited him out (I thought.)  He fussed at me and I waved my arms and banged my cup on the rail and looked mad.  Ha Ha he seemed to laugh.  I let him have a crumb . I thought I was rid of him, as Bert & Beatrice came to feed.  And back he came.  I gave up and let nature take it's course.  Little birds cleaned up the tiny crumbs (he does not bother) and  so end of morning drama.  Oh well I meant well, maybe I will let them be.

Do you love a rainy day. ? Think it is starting that way.  I used to love as a child to wake up to rain on a school day.  It meant getting to wear the rain gear and splash in puddles on the walk to school.  I did not like the rain boots.  Hard to get on over my shoes.  They were ugly brown and I tried to get out of wearing them, but I did not succeed .

CRAFTY OLD CROW

I write in black because the OLD BLACK CROW is BLACK.  And determined with no manners whatsoever.  I told him to GO, but he  took a bite and laughed at me. What a rude laugh!  I stood guard for a while, he did not want to give in.  Finally he gave up and stole one more crumb, for the road and flew around the building, out of sight, LAUGHING.  Bert and spouse flew in and took over.  But Old Black Crow had the last laugh.  Will that teach Bert to be late?  Hope so.  Oh boy, nothing to write.  Guess the birds are as about as interesting as the breakfast?  Which I changed up with a small piece of left over ham from dinner last night  Pared well with grits and scrambled egg and toast.  Ha Ha. Got that food in again. Don't forget coffee, which gives me a reason to go to the Balcony each morning.
